ASSESSMENT & PROMOTION GUIDELINES GRADE 1 – 7
Assessment is a process of collecting, analysing and interpreting information to assist teachers, parents and other stakeholders in making decisions about the progress of learners. Classroom assessment provides an indication of learner achievement in the most effective and efficient manner by ensuring that adequate evidence of achievement is collected using various forms of assessment.
TYPES OF ASSESSMENT
Classroom assessment is both formal and informal. It is important that the learners know what knowledge and skills are being assessed and feedback is provided to the learners after assessment in order to improve the learning process. Various forms of assessment are used in school-based assessment.
In the Foundation Phase, informal assessment is done on a daily basis and could be oral, practical or written. Informal assessment involves the daily monitoring of learner progress and is done through teacher observation and teacher-learner interaction.
Formal assessment in the Foundation Phase is done in the form of tests, projects and speeches.
