THE CURRICULUM
English is the medium of instruction at Craighall Primary. We follow the CAPS (Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement) initiative as prescribed by the Minister of Education in 2012.
The Principles of the National Curriculum Statement include:
  • Social Transformation
  • Active and critical thinking
  • High knowledge and high skills
  • Progression
  • Human rights, valuing indigenous knowledge system
  • Credibility
  • Quality and efficiency
  • Providing an education that is comparable in quality, breadth and depth to that of other countries

THE FOUNDATION PHASE: GRADES 1 - 3
The three main subject areas are:
  • Languages (Listening and speaking, reading and phonics, handwriting and writing)
  • Mathematics ( Operations, space and shape, measurement and data handling)
  • Life Skills ( Beginning knowledge, personal and social well-being, creative arts and physical education)

Specific structures are in place to ensure that education in the Foundation Phase is a continual process of acquiring knowledge and skills. We provide a nurturing environment. The pupils are privileged to have the expertise of specialised teachers in all of the creative arts, qualified Active Ed coaches and a specialist Computer teacher who runs our Knowledge Network Computer Centre. They also participate in an on line Mathematics programme in our Mathletics Laboratory. It is obvious that the decisions that we make in life are based on our value system. It is therefore, a sound value system that forms the core of our learning and teaching.

THE INTERMEDIATE PHASE: GRADES 4 - 6
The six main subject areas are:
  • English (Home Language): Language is a tool for thought and communication. It is also a means commonly shared among people to make better sense of the world they live in. Learning to use language effectively enables pupils to acquire knowledge, to express their identity, feelings and ideas, to interact with others and to manage their world.
  • Afrikaans (First Additional Language)
  • Mathematics: Mathematics is language that makes use of symbols and notations for describing numerical, geometric and geographical relationships. It is a human activity that involves observing, representing and investigating patterns. It helps to develop mental processes that enhance logical and critical thinking, accuracy and problem solving that will contribute to good decision-making.
  • Natural Science and Technology: Science is a systematic way of looking for explanations and connections in the physical world around us. In Science certain methods of inquiry and investigation are generally used. The methods include formulating hypotheses. Repeated investigations are undertaken and the resulting methods and results are carefully examined and debated before they are accepted as valid.
  • Social Science (History and Geography): The Social Science curriculum aims to provide opportunities for learners to look at their own world with fresh, critical eyes and perhaps more importantly, it aims to introduce learners to a world beyond their everyday realities.
  • Life Skills (Personal and social well-being, creative arts and physical education)

THE INTERMEDIATE PHASE: GRADES 4 - 6
The nine main subject areas are:
  • English (Home Language)
  • Afrikaans ( Additional Language)
  • Mathematics

The pupils in the Intersen phases are also privileged to have the expertise of specialised teachers in all subjects including the creative arts, Active Ed coaches and a specialist Computer teacher who runs our Knowledge Network Computer Centre. They also participate in an on line Mathematics programme in our Mathletics Laboratory. It is obvious that the decisions that we make in life are based on our value system. It is therefore, a sound value system that forms the core of our learning and teaching.
